Internet Business News - Sophos emphasises importance of computer security as confidential nuclear information is leaked by a virus

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

The importance of security for Internet users has been emphasised by SophosLabs, the virus and spam analysis centres for anti-virus company Sophos.

The announcement from SophosLabs was prompted by information released by the Japanese press stating that around 40MB of confidential reports concerning nuclear power plant inspections had been leaked onto the Internet. The reports are said to have been leaked when an employee of Mitsubishi Electric Plant Engineering (MPE) used his virus-infected PC for company business. The virus allowed over 250,000 users of the Japanese file-sharing system, Winny, access to the confidential data.

The public has been reassured by Japanese officials that information leaked was not thought to be of direct relevance to radioactive substances. It has been reported that the data referred to sites including Kansai Electric Power's Mihama nuclear plant and a power station in Tsuruga.
