Internet Business News - Patch for Windows flaw issued earlier than expected by Microsoft

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

A patch has been issued to fix a flaw in the Windows operating system from software company Microsoft Corp.

The patch was due to be issued on 10 January, however Microsoft Corp's development team were able to issue the patch earlier than expected.

According to Microsoft Corp, the flaw left computers vulnerable to attack if certain e-mail attachments were opened by users, or websites with harmful code were visited by users. It said the flaw gave attackers the potential to obtain control of a computer, though attacks have been lessened as a result of a move to shut malicious web sites down.

The company said attacks exploiting the vulnerability have been limited but urged users not to visit web sites unfamiliar to them, which may host the malicious code.
